Laurel Buxbaum, PsyD

Laurel Buxbaum

Dr. Buxbaum is Director of the Cognition and Action Laboratory at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. She holds a Psy.D. in Psychology with a specialization in clinical neuropsychology, and has post-doctoral training in experimental cognitive neuropsychology. She has received funding from the NIH, NIDRR, and James S. McDonnell Foundation.

Areas of Expertise

  • Skilled action in healthy participants and disorders of skilled action following stroke and corticobasal degeneration, including underlying neuropathology, nature of representations for object use, relationship of action knowledge to semantic knowledge systems, naturalistic action, relationship to putative “mirror neuron” systems, status of internal models for action planning, coding of hand-object interactions, and spatio-motor frames of reference for action.
  • Hemispatial neglect, including neuroanatomical substrate, patterns and subtypes of neglect, recovery, innovative treatments for neglect, e.g., prism treatment and virtual reality, and clinical barriers to effective treatment.
  • Cognitive neuropsychology research methods, including designing experiments with impaired populations, single case designs, and hypothesis-driven lesion analysis techniques.

Programs of Research

  • Use of behavioral and fMRI methods to explore the nature and neuroanatomic substrate of the skilled action system
  • Exploration of the factors underlying deficits in complex naturalistic action

  • Assessment and treatment of hemispatial neglect
